NYC SHSAT Practice Tests

There are four full-length practice tests below for students taking the test in grade 8 in the fall of 2026. Two of them have new content for this year. There are also mini practice tests that students in grade 9 should use together with the grade 8 practice tests. You can select versions that include translated directions and footnotes, choose whether you start with ELA or Math, and take a timed or untimed practice test. You should select the link that best describes the practice test experience you want to have.

Before beginning the practice test, you may want to review the document below called How to Prepare for the SHSAT. You will also find explanations of the correct answers for each of the practice tests in the documents below. You do not need to enter your name to start the practice test.

After you complete the practice test and submit your answers, you will be taken to a summary report which identifies the items you answered correctly or incorrectly. Be sure to click “Print this page” to print or save as a PDF if you will want to refer back to it. You can use this document along with the Explanations Appendix to review your performance.

Also note that for math items requiring use of the equation editor, you will need to refer to the Explanations Appendix or the exhibit embedded in the item to review the correct answer.

Translations and Accommodations:

Note that test items on the practice tests (and the actual test) are not translated. The languages below refer to translated directions and footnotes. ELLs and eligible former ELLs ONLY will have access to translated directions, translated footnotes, and a bilingual glossary for the exam.

Text to Speech (TTS) will only be available to students with an approved accommodation documented on an IEP or 504 Plan.

For any questions about these practice tests or resources, email SHSATassessment@schools.nyc.gov.

Overview

For both the practice test and the operational (real) test, there will be 50 items in each section. In ELA, the navigation bar on the practice test will tell you which passage set you are on, as well as the item number within that passage set. For example: passage set 3, item 1 of 6. On the real test, you will not see a passage number, but you will know which item you are on in the section. For example: item 17 of 50. The mathematics bar on the operational test will be similar to what you see on the practice test. You can also use the Explanations Appendix to track your progress.

You must select an answer to move on to the next question. You can only go back to questions within the same passage set.

You should select the timed version of the practice test if you want to simulate the standard time administration (three hours) and the untimed version if you want to simulate extended time administration (six hours) or review the answers and explanations in the Explanations Appendix as you go. If you used the timed version, your practice test will automatically submit once time is up. The practice test cannot be paused, so be sure to use the untimed version to avoid losing your progress if you do not have three hours straight to work on it.

Students who are taking the SHSAT exam in summer 2026 should use these practice tests to prepare. If you are sitting for the exam in the fall of 2026, this guidance is not for you. You should review the resources under the tab for your respective grade to the left of this tab. Text to Speech (TTS) will only be enabled on the exam for students whose IEP or 504 specifies "Tests Read: Excluding Tests of Reading Comprehension". Alternate language accommodations such as translated directions and footnotes will only be enabled on the exam for ELLs and eligible former ELLs. Students who are not eligible to receive these accommodations should practice using the "English (No Text to Speech)" form.
